Ricky Gervais was right. A holocaust movie is all she needs.

February 23, 2009

Here’s a transcript of Kate Winslet’s acceptance speech.

That fainting thing Penelope!

I’d be lying if I haven’t made a version of this speech before I was 8 years old and staring into the bathroom mirror. And this would have been a shampoo bottle. (referring to her Oscar.)

Well, it’s not a shampoo bottle now. I feel very fortunate to have made it all the way from there to here and I’d like to thank some of the people along the way who had faith in me. My friends and family, and especially my mum and dad, who are in this room somewhere. Dad please whistle so I’ll know where you are.” (He whistles) “I love you!” (To her dad)

There was no division between cast and crew on this film and that is what made it so special. So, to have been surrounded by a remarkable group of people who provided an unbroken chain of support. I’m so lucky to have a wonderful husband and two beautiful children who let me do what I love and who love me just the way that I am. Anthony and Sydney, this is for you, this is for both of you. And I want to acknowledge my fellow nominees, these goddesses, I think we all can’t believe we’re in a category with Meryl Streep at all! I’m sorry Meryl, but you have to just suck that up. And just to the Academy, thank you so much, my God!

P.S.

Robert Pattinson was there. He was seated behind The Wrestler.

Jai Ho won Best Song! Jai Ho! Go Slumdog Millionaire!!!!

Downtown Train

February 17, 2009

A performance so heartfelt that I wanted to find Ben Watt to give him a hug and tell him that everything’s gonna be allright. I didn’t get what the song meant though.

Downtown Train (Everything But The Girl)

Outside another yellow moon
punched a hole in the nighttime, yes
I climb through the window and down the street
shining like a new dime
the downtown trains are full with all those Brooklyn girls
they try so hard to break out of their little worlds

You wave your hand and they scatter like crows
they have nothing that will ever capture your heart
they’re just thorns without the rose
be careful of them in the dark
oh if I was the one
you chose to be your only one
oh baby can’t you hear me now

Will I see you tonight
on a downtown train
every night is just the same
you leave me lonely now

I know your window and I know it’s late
I know your stairs and your doorway
I walk down your street and past your gate
I stand by the light at the four way
you watch them as they fall
they all have heart attacks
they stay at the carnival
but they’ll never win you back

Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
where every night is just the same you leave me lonely
will I see you tonight on a downtown train
all of my dreams just fall like rain
all upon a downtown train

Dev Patel is Prince Zuko

February 10, 2009

Dev Patel is going to play Prince Zuko in the film adaptation of the animated television series  Avatar: The Last Airbender. I am so happy, I’ll  get off work early today to celebrate.

Prince Zuko is the exiled prince of the Fire Nation. To restore his honor and his right to the throne he has to capture the Avatar.   And, Oh yeah, he is always angry.

Now that I think about it, Dev Patel would make a very lovable Sokka too. Sokka and his Skins’ character, Anwar, have a lot in common.

Minced Goat Meat Curry

February 4, 2009

My family slaughtered 2 small goats for the holidays.  My father did all the work while my siblings and my mom watched, so it became some sort of family bonding activity. Weirdos. Mother made “kilawin” and “kaldereta”  for our  Christmas eve dinner.  Both were awful, but you can’t tell the woman who endured hours of labor and episiotomy just so your big head could get out, that her kaldereta is so greasy or that her “kilawin” tastes like a bad “bopis”.

Not to her face and not on Christmas eve.

My share of the kill were 4 bony legs. Two legs became the main ingredient in an osso buco that was ruined by too much thyme and stale olive oil. The other two was supposed to star in a Jamaican goat curry dish. I intended to chop the meat into bite size pieces but I  got carried away. Next thing I knew, I had bowl of minced goat meat in front of me. I sauteed the minced meat in garlic, onion, and chili peppers. I seasoned the meat with salt and pepper and let the meat cook over low heat until I am convinced that it is cooked. I then added the curry, chopped carrots and potatoes and waited again.

I spent 2 hours in the kitchen. I thought it was quite good. I asked my husband if he liked it, he said, “I am just not into curry dishes”.

Fair enough.
