good times never seem so good

May 28, 2009

I prefer Elvis’ version.

Where it began, I can’t begin to know when
But then I know it’s growing strong
Oh, wasn’t the spring, whooo
And spring became the summer
Who’d believe you’d come along

Hands, touching hands, reaching out
Touching me, touching you
Oh, sweet Caroline
Good times never seem so good
I’ve been inclined to believe it never would

And now I, I look at the night, whooo
And it don’t seem so lonely
We fill it up with only two, oh
And when I hurt
Hurting runs off my shoulder
How can I hurt when holding you

Oh, one, touching one, reaching out
Touching me, touching you
Oh, sweet Caroline
Good times never seem so good
Oh I’ve been inclined to believe it never would

Ohhh, sweet Caroline, good times never seem so good

He got me at "giant naked blue dude".

March 19, 2009

There are some things that can only be completely enjoyed while sitting inside a dark room in front of a 50 ft(more or less) screen with surround sound system.

Off the top of my head, I can think of four examples.

Jessica Alba diving into beautiful deep blue sea (Into the Blue)

            James Cameron’s sinking ship

            The Matrix lobby scene

            Sadako

Transcript of Marc Fennell’s(That movie… guy) review of the Watchmen.

There are two kinds of people in this world, the ones that look at the trailer for the brand new blockbuster Watchmen and get all preorgasmic at thought of seeing the world’s greatest graphic novel on the big screen and then there’s people who think, “Oh yeah, that super hero flick with the giant naked blue dude. What’s up with that?”

And both of you are going to experience this movie completely diffferently. So, let’s split this review in half.

None nerd version starts… now

Okay, the basic plot of  Watchmen is that the year is 1985, President Nixon is still in power somehow, the world is on the brink of nuclear war and superheroes exist. However, they have been outlawed and somebody is  picking them off one by one.

Sounds like a really generic superhero flick, but its not. Watchmen is a bit like Superman’s anxiety dream. It’s dark and raunchy, it’s  gritty, it’s heartbreaking, it’s full of philosophical ideas about the nature of justice and you may  or may not see somebody’s head get meat cleaver.

Nerd version

If you have read the Watchmen novel, you’ll know that it’s in a class of its own. You can open up to any page and have all this different elements mingling together -  multiple story lines, flashbacks, journal reports, newspaper clippings. To be honest, the graphic novel has more in common with an orchestra than a movie. You got all these different elements playing together, complementing each other all at once. It’s genius.

The problem is with the movie, in order to simplify those elements into a film narrative, it’s lost a lot of extra layers. When you strip them away, the individual scenes suddenly seem quite conky and boring. Please don’t misunderstand though, Watchmen may not be quite everything it could have been but when it is good it’s amazing.
